Right now South Sudan is experiencing a severe food crisis. After a poor season last year, the cost of food has risen astronomically making it extremely difficult for families to keep their children in school.

Henry’s Hike Against Hunger is a sub-project of Timpir’s School Lunch program on Chuffed.org: https://chuffed.org/project/timpirs-school-lunch-program

Timpir has learned that keeping kids in school is the best thing that can possibly be done to ensure that they have a brighter future. By supporting Timpir’s school lunch programme you can be directly responsible for keeping a child in school through the most difficult period of the famine. The food programme will prevent girls being married off to alleviate the famine for their families and enable them to stay in school longer through more educational opportunities. Boys are also at risk of being removed from school to help provide for their families during the famine.

Timpir is running a school lunch programme for students for June, July and August. Its goal is to raise $16,000 to cover the cost of food for all 1300 students at its Mabok and Waramoth schools.

There are very minimal admin costs. Timpir’s local Aussie team generously offer their time for free and mothers in the school communities volunteer to cook the food. Timpir has a dedicated and passionate team both here and in South Sudan who ensure your money goes directly to the schools and lunch program.

A donation of just $100 helps Timpir cover the cost of food for 1 school for a day. But any bit helps! For the price of a cup of coffee you can cover the cost of one student’s lunches for an entire month!! Please tell your friends, colleagues and family about the famine and how they can help!

Back in Kampala, Uganda

The group arrived safe and sound in Kampala yesterday. They had a busy time delivering aid but frustrated at not being able to do as much as they would have liked. The planes from Aweil were full so they made a quick drive to Wau flew from there to Juba then on to Kampala. Akon sounds very happy in the background but, she was very disappointed to leave her cousins, friends and the family’s goats in Wäramoth .

Peter heads off on the Gorilla Safari today while the Baak family have a day of rest. Back in Adelaide on Sunday, Pt Pirie Monday.

Problems

The group arrived in Aweil on Monday ready to shop but found their Cashpassport card would not work because the banks have sanctions on Sudan. The rest of the world does not seem to have recognized that South Sudan is now a separate country. They called home for some cash to be transferred but it was 4.05pm and the banks here were closed. They had to delay the shopping and find some accommodation for the night. Tuesday morning Kuol was up early but the money transfer place doesn’t open until 10.00am. They need to buy school supplies and probably every mosquito net available in Aweil. They looked for blackboards but to no avail. So now they are off to deliver text books, stationery and exercise books to Mabok school.

The wheelchairs do not appear to be completed yet so they will attend to that on their return.

Wäramoth Activities

A successful meeting was held with the community resulting in the election of a parents’ committee. The horse was used to bring the bricks from the river to the school. The group are hoping to travel to the 2nd school in the Mabok region on the 13th. Members of the group are experiencing the usual travellers stomach ailments, hopefully all the medications that were carried will fix the problems.

Wäramoth

The group have made it to the village of Wäramoth. They managed to get a car in Aweil, although I believe it may have a few fuel issues. On the first day Peter learnt about sitting around and greeting many family and friends that came to visit Kuol’s family and friend from Australia.

After 2 nights in Juba, the group successfully secured hotly contested seats for a flight to Aweil. They arrived safely in Aweil at approx. 10.15am this morning the 6th Feb. They are hoping to travel to the village of Wäramoth this afternoon. All their luggage got there, so they have succeeded in getting all of the medical gear they were able to carry through the various customs. Akon sounds very excited. They hope to have phone access in the village, the updates will be dependent on this.

Birthing kit delivery 2008

On arriving in Uganda in January 2008, Kuol spent 2 and a half days at customs trying to collect the consignment. All seven boxes in the consignment were released after a tax of US$200 was paid (this was generously covered by Zonta International).

Mel and Kuol then carted the 150kg of goods on buses to the north of Uganda and across to Juba in South Sudan. Henry and I arrived in Wäramoth two weeks after Mel and Kuol. On our second to last day in Wäramoth a large number of women including two midwives were gathered at Mel and Kuol’s ‘home’, a tent, latrine and shower tent. We demonstrated, using Kuol and his mother as interpreters, how to use the birthing kits, stressing the hand washing and safety with the scalpel blades. We divided the birthing kits in to four lots of 50 to be used in different regions around Wäramoth. News spread and the next day 2 more midwives arrived at Mel and Kuol’s home to be given their kits, this was very useful as it was too difficult for us to walk to them.

The partnership between Zonta International and Timpir is a new and developing one, but one we hope will continue for many years to come. To date we have delivered 400 birthing kits to South Sudan which have hopefully assisted with the safe and healthy delivery of 400 babies in South Sudan.

Birthing Kit Assembly Day 2008

Seven laboratory technicians, a Ph.D student and Mel and Kuol gathered together in the University of South Australia’s School of Pharmacy & Medical Sciences staff room one long lunch hour to assemble 200 birthing kits which had been donated by Zonta International. Each kit had a small block of soap, a scalpel blade, a gauze pad, a pair of gloves and a large piece of black plastic packed into a small plastic bag. It was an art to pack all of the contents neatly and small enough to fit in the bag. The birthing kits were part of a consignment of donations including pens, pencils, school bags and antiseptic cream that Timpir sent to South Sudan in December 2007.
